" We will travel to a different time and place. Immersing ourselves into a famous artwork. Imagining that you are part of that scenario. Your task is to look at that painting, think to yourself "What do I see? What era is this set? What is familiar? What is not? What are the people doing? "
The lesson will start with an introduction to letter formatting. A breakdown of each characteristic will be explained and demonstrated through the instructor. They will write their letter format together.
To set the tone of the main activity, the instructor will display an artwork for demonstration. A short anticipatory set will be given to activate their thinking.
They will be given a printout of the artwork each, without sharing it to anyone. The students will disperse into their own space around the classroom, or out in the hallway to closely look at the artwork. The teacher will go around to help guide students. They will be given 30 minutes to write their letter.
Once everyone is ready, they will be divided into 6 groups of 3. They will take turns reading their letter to the group mates while the artworks are displayed. The task of the listener is to see which artwork the speaker is talking about.
Once everyone has done their turn, a group discussion will take place at the end to reflect on the students thoughts, and output of their letters.
